Mike Lane > I love going to baseball games to see the fireworks.
Mike Lane > I'm not much into baseball really, but I am very into fireworks.
Mike Lane > When I got my 20D, I couldn't wait to try my hand at shooting fireworks.
Mike Lane > Well it turns out that I love shooting fireworks. It is shots like this one that make it all worth it. The fireworks nearly filled the image here. Wow!
Mike Lane > Fireworks has a little skill and a lot of luck involved. You throw away a lot of images. But the ones you get are striking.
Mike Lane > I shot the fireworks at the Tacoma Rainiers games a lot last year. They were excellent practice for the 4th of July fireworks show at Gasworks Park in 2005 (that gallery is on my site by the way).
Mike Lane > This year i wanted to try something a bit different. My wife, my brother-in-law David, and I decided to go to the opening day game of the Rainers.
Mike Lane > My goal with these shots was to get a little more sense of the size of the fireworks by getting part of the stadium in the shot.
Mike Lane > I'm a little out of practice. I forgot to bring my remote shutter release. So all of these shots were done with my hand on the camera (which was on a tripod of course).
Mike Lane > Notice that the two bursts make up the eyes, the smoke trail makes up a nose line for this face in the fireworks.

Also these were taken with my EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 lens. I can't wait to shoot a few shots with my new 17-40 f/4 L!
Mike Lane > I like the distant shots but I also love close-up fireworks shots. This shot includes heart-shaped bursts.
Mike Lane > Another close up of two bursts. Another thing I like is when fireworks have a feathered look about them.
Mike Lane > Sometimes the smoke can be part of the image. In this case the fireworks are making the smoke look green.
Mike Lane > Another fine ending to yet another fine show at the Rainiers game in Tacoma. The finale is always the most difficult part for me to get. You have to know when it's coming and you have to set your shutter speed to a second or two but no more or you'll end up with a big white mess.
